“Whatever poison Satan produces, God turns it into medicine for his elect”

– John Calvin

Oh, how blessed we are that God is sovereign over Satan’s schemes; that nothing can come against us that isn’t under God’s control.

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” -Romans 8:31

In the darkness of our miseries,the grace of God shines more brightly.” -John Calvin

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for tose who are called according to his purpose.” -Romans 8:28

Just thought I’d share this Psalm with you all today…

Psalm 124

 1 “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,”
         Let Israel now say—
 2 “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,
         When men rose up against us,
 3 Then they would have swallowed us alive,
         When their wrath was kindled against us;
 4 Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
         The stream would have gone over our soul;
 5 Then the swollen waters
         Would have gone over our soul.”

 6 Blessed be the LORD,
         Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
 7 Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
         The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
 8 Our help is in the name of the LORD,
         Who made heaven and earth.

His grace is what sustains us. Where would we be if the LORD were not on our side. We certainly would be consumed by our enemies. “If God is for us, who can be against us?”Romans 8:31. Praise be to Jesus who has taken our sins upon Himself! We have been adopted and thus His fatherly care is upon us.

“Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.  Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.”

Romans 8:33-34

 So… Who is it, that will bring a charge against us? Well, Satan will do that, the world will do that, even some among the church will do that… But that doesn’t matter, for we are God’s elect, His purchased possesion. Indeed it is God who has justified us from all the charges that could be held against us. It was Christ who died, suffered God’s hatred and judment of sin, who endured the wrath for the joy set before Him. It is Christ who sits at the Father’s right hand who pleads our case, who washed us clean and defends us in the holy court of God. O, Praise Him all you peoples, for His love has conquered sin and death! Praise Him for His sacrifice is enough! Praise Him for He has risen victoriously!

“…knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

– 1 Peter 1:18-19

Just a few things I think worthy to point out…

1. Before God’s effectual call upon our lives we lived in “aimless conduct”. This aimless conduct was inherited and passed down by our fathers, being born under sin. Indeed we were “slaves to sin” (Romans 6), and “children of wrath” (Ephesians 2).

2. We weren’t redeemed by something corruptible, but with the perfect eternal sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He was the spotless Lamb of God and was the ultimate sacrifice to appease God’s holy wrath which hung over our heads.

Oh what sweet news! We have been redeemed! Made new… able to enjoy our Creator!

“ Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
And whose sins are covered;
Blessed is the man to whom the LORD shall not impute sin.”

-Romans 4:7-8

The good news is that the blessed man described here, is not one who has striven, overcome, and lives in perfect holiness. No, The blessing comes upon one who has practiced lawlessness, one who really does have sin in his account. However, the key words here in these verses are “Forgiven” and “Covered”.

Who is righteous? Who can stand? No one, no not one! We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God, but in Jesus Christ we have redemption! His atoning death covers our lawless deeds and sins. Furthermore His righteousness was imputed to us as Christ bore God’s holy wrath against our sins, and thus the blessing is upon us! We are His children, His beloved bride. We are blessed more than all peoples!

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus,

who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:1

Oh what a valuable promise we have here in this verse. The fact that we can stand before Holy God, is based solely upon the righteousness that Christ has poured into our account. His righteousness for us means no more condemnation! We must hold on to this promise as it is easy to become burdened and condemned by the weight of the law. But may our heads be raised as we see Christ victorious! Let us be joyous in our Redeemer! May His spirit lead us in the paths of righteousness.
